Festival of Hexagons

I heard there was a really fun linky party to show off hexagon quilty projects, so I had to put my name in the hat!  Many of you have seen this quilt a few times, so bear with me!

I started this quilt in 2010 to have something to do during vacation.  I had an idea of how I wanted it to look, and only used scraps from my stash.  I used 1" hexagons.

Slowly but surely, the quilt top came together.  I sewed mostly during nap times.  I wish I kept track of the hours!  About 7 months later, I had a finished quilt top!  The picture below was taken somewhere around Christmas 2010

The handquilting started in February 2011.  I borrowed a hinterburg frame and worked on it turing TV time.

 

After many more months, I finally finished the quilt in March 2012! I loved the process so much, I started another on last July! 

 

Here is a full view.  This quilt is bed sized, about a full.  Working with stash made the quilt inexpensive.

Bloggers' Quilt Festival - Spring 2012

I really enjoyed participating in the Blogger's Quilt Festival last year, so naturally I can't wait to see what I see this year!  There was no question about what quilt I wanted to showcase this year.  I began my Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt in July 2010.  The piecing took about 7 months or so.  I used 1.5" hexagons in a scrappy motif with a consistent pathway fabric.

I was fortunate to borrow a friend's Hinterburg quilting hoop and began the quilting in February 2011.  I enjoyed quilting during my TV times, especially in the colder months.  Here, I could drape the quilt a bit over my legs while I worked.

Quilting took a bit more than a year.  It was finished and ready for binding in March 2012.





It was bittersweet to finish!  I love this quilt and really enjoyed handpiecing and quilting.  I would like to improve my quilting skills (smaller stitch-length and improving my ability to hife stitches in the hexagon pieces) and have another quilt planned in my head for this year or next!

One year and nine months later....

I have a quilt!!!

I started this journey in July 2010.  I cannot remember where the main inspiration came from, but I do remember looking at Bonnie Hunter's Hexagon quilt and thinking it was time to start one!

I spent many hours sitting just like this using a borrowed Hinterburg frame.  The hoop was 29" and too big for me to work with, but the weight of the quilt itself made it hang taut enough for me to work quite well.  I would just drape it and get to work!

Many, many, many hours later, here it is!  This was a really rewarding journey to say the least.  I look forward to more hand piecing projects in my future!

Working on those UFOs!

Another week has passed! I am on vacation from school and using that time to catch up on my WIPs!  Can you believe this is all I have left on my GFG?!?!?  (Insert maniacal laughter)  I hope to finish it within a week!

Seen this before?  This is the last of three I have made.  I get so bored doing the same thing over and over again, but I am going to push through and finish.  Today I finished the applique and blanket stitching, and now have it ready for quilting.

Now for the stash report.  Once the GFG is finished, I will finally be able to count some yardage for the binding.  I can't start Carl's Quilt until I get some batting.

GFG Anniversary and a Stash Report update!

It has been one year since I began quilting my Grandmother's Flower garden Quilt.  This quilt officially started in July 2010.  It took about 7 months to assemble using 1.5" finished hexagons and LOADS of scraps!  I have made so much progress in the quilting.

Here is a reminder of what it looks like.

This gives a better picture of what the quilting looks like.  I am a stab-stitcher I must admit.  I am working on learning the rocking stitch, but it is hard with the batting I chose (warm and white) and how thick my seams are.  I am learning and will change how I do things next time around!



 Way over in the corner you see what has not been finished yet.  I am so close to completing this quilt!  I don't have the time I used to but I still plan to complete this quilt by summer.  That will give me plenty of time!

And now for the stash report.  There are no changes from last week but I will be using more fabric in the very near future!

There will soon be more UFOs.  My step-father unexpectedly passed away a few days ago.  My mother gave me his shirts and I will be making a quilt for her to snuggle with when she thinks of him.  Also, I was given another project to do and I just have no idea how to go about it.  I need to put my thinking cap on!



Still chugging along

The last few days I have been working on my Grandmother Flower Garden Quilt.  It is so awesome to see I have more finished than I have left to do!  I have one small and one large section to go!  Working around the edges takes so long because it just doesnt stay as taut as I like.  I am approaching the one-year anniversary of beginning this quilt.  I can't begin to imagine how many hours I have worked on this baby.  Well in the hundreds likely.
